How would you describe your business idea to a potential investor?
At Custom Surgical we use smartphone cameras and AI to screen pathologies of the eye in developing countries. We have a patented optical system that attaches to smartphones and allows image capturing of the retina (posterior part of the eye).
What problem do you want to solve, what is your goal?
We want to do early screening of eye diseases to allow proper treatment and maintain the eyesight of people around the world.
How did you come up with your idea/concept?
Through the experiences with our medical advisors. According to them, this is the most problematic situation. Patients lose their eyesight because they arrive at the doctor when it is too late, therefore, preventive screenings are the solution. Also, in developing countries there are few expensive machines to diagnose the patients, therefore a portable and affordable solution like the one we developed was required.
What is your business model?
We are developing a B2B business model for private clinics, insurances, and governments as customers. We will charge them a fixed fee to utilize our solution and screen, countless patients, without the need of an ophthalmologist
How accurate is your system?
We currently have a 90% accuracy on detecting Diabetic retinopathy. That accuracy is constantly growing due to the fact that we are constantly increasing our database.
What is your USP?
We use smartphones instead of expensive and nonportable fundus cameras. Therefore, we can access populations in remote areas and screen them in an affordable way.
How are you gathering the data to train your algorithm?
We first started with available open databases. But currently, we are gathering the images and creating our proprietary database, which will also include the labeling of other diseases.
Why did you decide to work with XPRENEURS?
XPRENEURS is the leading technology accelerator in Germany. Therefore, becoming a part of the program will certainly help our project and boost our current success.
